Resources
Practical steps that help turn flooding from “stories” into usable evidence (locations, times, impacts, repeat points).
What to record
Time window, exact location, depth, photos/video, direction of flow, blocked gullies, smells/colour for sewer indicators.
Safety
Avoid flood water. Assume contamination possible. Keep children/pets away, and don’t drive through unknown depth.
After the event
Note how long it lasted, what cleared it, repeat issues (same gully/ditch), and any internal damage.
Suggested checklist
- Date + approximate time started/peaked/cleared.
- Exact spot: street, junction, landmark, low point.
- Flow direction: where it came from and where it went.
- Depth estimate: kerb height, doorstep, wheel height, etc.
- Photos/video from a safe distance (keep originals if possible).
